California Extreme 2006
These are my arcade pictures that I took at California Extreme 2006.
Here's the official site of the event California Extreme.
2006 is one of best year for California Extreme event (for me) because there was tons of prototype games
including the very rare Freedom Fighter and Road Runner laserdisc prototype games.
In fact there are quite many prototype pictures that I have decided to have separate section for those pictures.
Favorite game of the event.
Freedom Fighter Laserdisc Prototype Game
This is one of most rare game you'll ever find. What makes this game even rarer is the fact that this is a prototype! This game was based off anime movies Galaxy Express 999 and Adieu Galaxy Express 999 (a sequel). This game introduced me to the anime after researching this game on the internet. The anime became one of my favorite anime but enough of that. The game is played off the laserdisc video and you play the game by using the joystick to control where you want to go, by twisting the joystick, and to shoot the baddies. It also have the "slow" button which you hold to slow down the game to make it easier for you to shoot stuff but you have limited use of it, after that you cannot use it anymore for rest of the game. What makes this game unique is that there are no blank screens after each scene. Yes other games do have this feature but this game was much more complexed, like for instance, when you twist the joystick to control where you go, you could move around the screen before you reach the different path. As far as I know no other games have this feature. As for the video itself, the video sequences on laserdisc disc was also complexed. The frames from several scenes were shuffled together like shuffing the cards. How do I know this? Well I do have the mepg rip of this game as well as other games that I got from the rom burners. I have watched this video as well as firefox which has similar video sequences but less shuffled. Freedom Fighter was the most shuffled of them all that I have seen. This is why the game has no blank screens between scenes. Of course, this would explain why I have read that this game broke down often because of laserdisc player breaking down. No wonder, the shuffled scenes forced the player to work extra hard skipping between frames for the game. To see the many feature I spoke about, you can watch the video that I took at the next year's event. There are also other videos too so be sure to watch them too!
